The last voyage of Charon.

The last voyage of Charon (2015).

40 x 60 cm. Pencil, ballpoint pen and pastel on paper.

After millenia of taking condemned souls to hell, Charon makes his ultimate journey to the Kingdom of Shadows. He knew he would share his final crossing with the destiny of two last passengers. The journey from which there would be no return.

No longer the fierce and fearful demon who beats spirits to dislodge them from his boat. Bent and aging in every way, slowly rowing, with serenity, to the final point of his last crossing.

He would forever remember the pale moon reflected in the calm and frigid waters, and the fog caressing his face as he rowed.

Now, his boat evermore would stay cast upon the shore, and the jaws of the cavern of hellwould soon be closed forever. And the sun would set for the last time behind the misty horizon of Styx lagoon.

  Next to the ruins of Lupshara

  A dark abyss is opened

  Devouring man and beast

  Silently growing

  Feeding insatiably

  From the mountain of the occult

  Slowly;

  Drought to drought;

  storm to storm

  In its cavernous gut

  At once inviting and hostile

  It has given shelter to the bear

  And sepal to the hunter

  Delicately at its breast

  Molded mischievous to the mother rock

  It plays with impossible forms

  Patiently

  Drop by drop;

  Flood by flood

  It has seen the frosts come and go

  turning green meadow

  Into thick and shaded wood

  And one day at the hour of final collapse

  It will emerge into the profanity of light

  To die under the sun, forgotten by men

  Closing the cycle;

  century by century;

  eclipse by eclipse

For years I practiced caving, and I have seen the wonders of the fragile subterranean world. This drawing alludes to those that enter this world without the respect it deserves, looting, trashing destroying whatever they find on their path. In the lower part, in Ruin letters, is included an extraordinary phrase that summarizes unlike any other what should be the behaviour of anyone who visits a cave.

It was used as a motto by the NSS (National Speleological Society of America) of the United States, the organization dedicated to the exploration, study, and conservation of caves.

“Take nothing but pictures,

leave nothing but footprints,

kill nothing but time.”
